Flora, Fauna and Food – Review
Remembering the pop-up dinner hosted by Bumblebee Flower Farm chef’d by Eddie Attwell as part of A Taste of West Cork Food Festival on Thursday 13th of September.
A true talent in Eddie Attwell has been bestowed on West Cork, as this playful 8 course tasting menu illustrated. Left to run free in the acres of gardens at Bumblebee Flower Farm just outside of Drimoleague, Eddie sources beautiful edibles from flowers, wild fauna, micro greens, salads and herbs growing there.
Slow cooked lamb and pork finished off in a Green Egg we’re so tender they just fell apart. Blackberry leaf granita, heirloom tomatoes, chicken skin and tapioca crackers with whipped black pudding; gin pears and ginger cake, aerated chocolate and white chocolate disks pressed with rose petals; alongside fizz flavoured with cordials made from rose and meadowsweet.
Absolute perfection, beautifully hosted too by Mags. Every course was served personally by Eddie and it came with a story, a memory or a quirky tale. As a chef-grower Eddie understands more about the individual flavour and texture properties of plants, and how best to treat them to deliver intrigue and playfulness into his faultless plates of food.
Sixteen people dined at a Long Table inside a polytunnel, lit by candlelight and decorated with sprays of seasonal flower garlands. Magical. More of this please…..Highlight of the festival for me.
